BREFs & BATAELs

Within Europe, all plants treating Waste, included in the scope of the Industrial Emissions Directive (IED) must prevent and reduce pollution, use energy efficiently, prevent accidents and limit their consequences by applying the Best Available Techniques (BATs).

An updating of the legislations regulating Waste-to-Energy plants has been issued by EU Commission in 2019 under a new version of BREFs (BAT Reference document) with a high focus of lowering emission limits by defining a range of BATAELs (Best Available Techniques Associated Emission Levels).

Those emission limits are the basis for design of state-of-the-art and highly efficient Flue Gas Treatment and all plants in Europe would have to fulfil with the new emissions limits to air (summarized below) end 2023 at latest.
